Every partnership has a quiet shelf life. The contract gets signed, the bank account gets opened, the first product ships, and somewhere in the middle of all that motion you stop noticing that the clock is already running. I have watched four partnerships end and only two of those endings were planned. The other two ambushed me, and both times I was the last person in the room to see them coming.
Here is what nobody tells you. The friendship and the company are not on the same timeline. The company can outlive the friendship by twenty years and still print money. The friendship can outlive the company by a lifetime and still feel like home on a Tuesday afternoon. The hard part is that you do not get to choose which one survives. The decisions you make in year two, when you are tired and underpaid and the partnership feels like a marriage that nobody officiated, those decisions pick the winner for you. Quietly. Permanently.
So I ask the question out loud, in the first ninety days, before the legal paper dries. When this thing ends, and it will end, what do I want to be able to call you. Partner who paid me out fair. Co-founder I still send a Christmas card to. Family. Stranger. Then I write the answer down and I let it shape every term sheet, every operating agreement, every buyout clause we negotiate from there. Because the version of the ending you refuse to imagine is the version that finds you.
